The minute I feel a chill in the air, I head for the stove.

Nothing warms me like a bowl of hot soup (sorry, honey). I’ll make a pot of soup a week until at least April, and when I’m out to eat, I always order a bowl of whatever they have that day. Of course, I have my favorites! Here are some can’t-miss soups on the North Shore:

Baked Five Onion Soup at Morton’s, Northbrook
The ultimate American version of the French staple. One type of onion is simply not enough! I want five! And can you melt a lot of cheese on it, too? Thanks!

BBQ Pork and Crispy Vegetable Wonton at Noodle Bar
, Lake Bluff
Lots of different textures and Asian flavors in a soul-stirring broth.

Butternut/Kabocha Squash with Curry Cream at Lulu’s, Evanston
Just a hint of spice, a touch of sweet, and all delicious. I have this once a week if possible.

Chicken Tortilla at Bat 17, Evanston
Thick, rich and perfect with a half a corned beef sandwich or a grilled cheese (with bacon and tomato, of course).

Chicken Pot Pie at DC Sarnies, Deerfield
It’s a soup. It’s a chicken pot pie. Discuss.

Clam Chowder from Burhop’s, Wilmette and Glenview
If you want the freshest clam chowder, you go to the source.

Matzo Ball Soup at Max & Benny’s, Northbrook
This will cure whatever ails you. Just what Grandma ordered.

Minestrone at Jolane’s, Glenview
Loaded with veggies, this is a soup you can feel good about.

Tempura Udon at Sushi Kushi Too
, Highland Park
Thick udon noodles, delicious broth and crispy tempura equal yummy.

Tomato Basil at The Noodle, Wilmette
A long-time Make It Better favorite, just around the corner from our office. Creamy, rustic and oh, so good.

White Hot Chicken Chili at Three Tarts, Northfield
My other weekly bowl of soup. Only available on Fridays, this is the one I crave all summer long. White beans, chunks of chicken, and secret spicy flavors. Mmmmmm.
