Describe how your organization lives/realizes its mission.

CAWC is the oldest and one of the largest domestic violence agencies in Chicago. CAWC began delivering services to the Chicagoland area in 1977 when the organization was formally established. In 1979, CAWC opened the first domestic violence shelter, Greenhouse Shelter, which still operates 24 hours-a-day, seven days-a-week, providing safe refuge to mothers and their children. Domestic violence continues to be a deeply entrenched problem, impacting millions of families. Nationally, 1 in 3 women in the United States have experienced physical violence by an intimate partner, and in Illinois in 2014, 65,800 domestic violence incidents were reported to law enforcement (National Coalition Against Domestic Violence). CAWC’s confidential shelter and community-based services are important to helping victims safely leave abusive relationships, remain safe while receiving our services, and transition to lives free from violence. For the past 40 years, CAWC has been instrumental in assisting and supporting survivors of abuse and their children with services structured to meet the needs of a diverse population.
